Dinosaurs are fascinating creatures that walked our earth many years ago. By today’s standard, they were huge creatures, vastly different in many ways from the animals we know now. Many dinosaurs are believed to have been types of lizards, very large lizards. Although, more recently, it has been discovered that not all dinosaurs were lizards.
However, when you think about it hard enough, in today’s society we wear or are inspired by almost all large animals on the planet. Who’s to say dinosaurs wouldn’t be draped around someone’s neck? Or even a bag made out of their hide? Just the thought alone is interesting. Let’s dig a little deeper into dinosaurs in general.
During the age of the dinosaurs there many many creatures great and small. It is important to note though, that small during this time was far larger than what we consider to be small now. Even worms, caterpillars, arachnids, and other small creatures were once the size of animals we now consider to be large.
Dinosaurs are incredibly interesting because they are quite similar to today’s animals yet incredibly different. When learning about the world, it is important to learn about its past. One important part of that past is the time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Here, you will learn some interesting things about dinosaurs as well as where to find more information and how to research various information on the subject.
While there are many different types of dinosaurs, they all fall into one of three categories. The first category is called carnivorous which means that the dinosaur ate meat. The second is herbivores which means that it ate only plants. The third is omnivorous which means that the dino eats both plants and meat.
Many times, people make the mistake of sorting creatures into only two categories, carnivorous and herbivores. Even today, a person might refer to themselves as a carnivore, but they misunderstand the definition. The term carnivore does not just mean that a person or animal will eat meat, it does refer to an animal that feeds on flesh, but the meat is their primary source of food, often their only source.
For a creature that consumes both meat and plants, the proper term is an omnivore. Big or small, all creatures fall into one of these three categories. For more information, check out this link dinosaur.org.
Dinosaurs come in all shapes and sizes, many looked very similar to the animals we are familiar with today and others were vastly different. Some walked on four legs, some on only two. Some have incredibly long necks and have oversized heads. Some were brightly colored and others were very dark in coloration. There were some Dinosaurs with opposable thumbs and some with claws.
Within all of these different Dinosaurs, just like with today’s animals, some lived in the water, some on land, and some could take to the air. Also, there were those that lived in warm climates, some in cold climates, some in rainy areas, and some in every other part of the world. Dinosaurs were incredibly diverse.
If you enjoy learning about these huge creatures, how they lived, what they looked like, where they lived, there are many wonderful resources available. One resource is the written word. There are many books written on the subject of dinosaurs, some are geared to very young children, some are for older children and then there are those designed for adults who wish to learn more.
Most of these are available at any library and any that are not can generally be obtained through an interlibrary loan. Another way to have dinosaurs in your life is to partake of entertainment media that involves dinosaurs. There have been many movies made that involve dinosaurs in some way. There have been movies that show what would happen if a scientist managed to recreate dinos from the blood in a mosquito frozen in amber.
Other movies show children a look into what a day in the life of a dinosaur would have been like. There are many books written in a similar style. If you are not familiar with any of these, a simple internet search will provide you with many options. Simply type in something along the lines of “dinosaur movies” or “dinosaur books”. There are also some television shows that involve dinos, though there are fewer of those than the other option.
