PARIS, Jan 19, 2013/ — According to Bill Gaytten, Creative Director at John Galliano, the starting point of the Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 menswear collection came from a Joseph Beuys installation.
A prolific artist, German-born Beuys was known for his innovative use of material; in particular the contrast of felt with the unexpected, combined with his personal style inspired this collection.”
And thus, “contrast” became the theme of the collection. Everything became a counterpoint pair -mix/match, asymmetry/fit, drape/shape, slim/volume.
Even the fabric was not sacred as seen by unusual combinations – plain/print, pinstripe/check, leather/wool, jacquard/embroidery, felt/silk.
And the colors are dramatic with the pairing of classic &fluorescent, in a muted palette of charcoal grey, black, camel, burgundy and olive with unexpected fluorescent shoes. For the prints, it was a play on positive/negative, photographic/painterly.
In short, contrast is key: Smart/casual, casual/smart as Galliano Homme dresses the multi-layered modern man.
And the accessory de rigueur, hats that are reminiscent of the ten gallon hat which was created by Stephen Jones for John Galliano.
