Culturally, the prom is an American phenomenon that traces its roots way back to the late 19th century. But school dances are held worldwide, though it might be called a school formal, summer ball, or school socials. So, to paraphrase Shakespeare’s “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” we can say that “a prom by any other name will still be one of the biggest events in the high school calendar.”
Corollary to that, April to June might be the prom season in the US, but because of its global nature, school dances happen at different months. Case in point, Hogwarts held their “Yule Ball” (presumptively their equivalent of prom) on Christmas Day.
So, whatever time of year your school hold their prom, if you are going to be attending, then you will want to of course look your very best. Every prom will be slightly different, and it is important that you find a prom dress that is suitable for that event and fits the theme if there is one. Selecting the right dress for this big occasion is no easy task and if you want to get it right, then make sure to carry on reading to learn more about all the things you should consider when buying a prom dress.
What Is Your Body Type?
Before you venture online to start looking at prom dresses, the first thing that we would recommend you do is consider what your body type is. While one style of dress may look amazing on one of your classmates, it may not look as good on you and not everyone will look amazing in just any old prom dress. Women all have different body shapes and you should be looking at choosing a style which highlights your assets and hides your flaws. The different body shapes include rectangle, apple, pear and hourglass. When you know the shape of your body and what best style best flatters it, this will set you on the right path to choosing the most amazing prom dress that perfectly suits you. For example, if you have an hourglass figure, then you will probably be looking at getting a prom dress that hugs your body in all the right places. Have a look online and so some research to see what type of dress will best suit you.
What Style Will You Choose?
Once you know what your body shape is, this will give you an idea of the different styles of dresses that you can choose from and will look flattering on you. Prom is a formal event, and so you will be looking to get a dress that fits this special occasion. Many people tend to think that you need to opt for a floor length dress when choosing a dress for your prom, however, this is not the case and you can find plenty of formal dresses that are mid-thigh or knee length and are perfect for the event. Are you going to opt for an embellished dress? A plunging neckline? A strapless gown? Or maybe you are looking at opting for a fishtail design. There are many fabulous different styles for you to choose from and you will definitely be able to find the right dress for you.
Choosing the Right Colour
Many proms have a specific colour theme that you will want to opt for, and even if it does not, you will still want to choose a shade of colour that looks great and flatters your skin tone. Many girls love to opt for pink prom dresses and the Jovani designer pink prom dresses fit the bill perfectly if you are looking for a prom dress that is girly, embellished, flattering and catches the eye with its beautiful colour. Many girls will also love to opt for a neutral design if they don’t want something too out there and you can always add in some pops of colour with your accessories. Remember, when you are choosing your prom dress colour you also need to keep in mind what accessories you are going to opt for as you want these things to complement each other rather than clash.
Choosing The Right Length
As we previously mentioned, prom dresses are traditionally floor length, but nowadays this is not always the case and you can opt for a range of different lengths for your prom dress. If you are quite tall, then opting for a floor length dress is most likely the best option for you, however, for those girls out there who are a little shorter, a floor length gown can sometimes make you look even smaller and drown your petite frame. Instead, why not opt for a shorter dress at mid-thigh or knee length as this will help to elongate you and make you look taller, especially if you are wearing some amazing high heels with it.
Styling Your Hair
Finally, when you are searching for the perfect prom dress, you will want to keep in mind how you are going to style your hair. For example, if you already know that you want to have your hair pinned up, then you might want to show off your shoulders with a gorgeous strapless dress.
Make sure to keep each of these things in consideration when choosing dresses for your upcoming prom!
