With the space race once again in full swing as China reached the moon and private corporations plan on conquering either Luna and/or Mars, the Missoni Summer 2019 campaign which is resplendent in the nocturnal lights of space as background, the Italian maison joins the current zeitgeist.
And, if you are more of a sci-fi/fantasy fan than a fashionista, then the stars and planets transforming into an ethereal background framing Gisele Bündchen and Tamino Amir Moharam, the photos seem like a scene in the newest Brandon Sanderson YA Novel – Skyward. Gisele might be too old to be Spensa (the female protagonist) but Tamino is a perfect Jorgen.
So, why am I mentioning sci-fi/fantasy in a fashion campaign? It’s because fashion does not live on an island. Fashionistas can be big fans of the genre. Case in point, the continued popularity of “Game of Thrones,” its fandom can be found from all walks of life.
That, in turn brings as back to the Missoni Summer 2019 campaign. It is so of-the-moment that the skies which are so blue is reminiscent of a baroque theater. The close-up and extended views of the galactic, sandy and blazing destinations strengthen the unexpected mixing of fashion and sci-fi/fantasy.
In the campaign, desert landscapes are animated by sand dunes and craters, painted by the reflections of stars. They frame the two protagonists: top model Gisele Bündchen, historic testimonial for Missoni, and singer Tamino Amir Moharam Fouad, the latest sensation in the European alternative rock scene.
The two models reveal this season’s looks and pose as if they were dreamlike creatures emerging from the astral heavens. Dresses encrusted in ruffles and gossamer knitted mesh or iridescent ensembles in space-dyed lamé drape the body of a dancing Gisele.
The meditative Tamino wears suits in loom-knit or woven fabrics with grosgrain-like textures as he contemplates the obscurity of space. Both models were shot in full and half plans by Harley Weir for a campaign on which Angela Missoni sets her signature to the creative direction.
The two protagonists appear as travelers who transcend space and time; embodying the nomadic spirit of the latest summer collections for Missoni and Missoni Man.
So, perhaps… they are truly going skyward!
