Akola, Dallas-based nonprofit jewelry and accessories brand, opens its new flagship store in Snider Plaza Shopping Center on Saturday, October 22nd. Akola, which means “she works” in Uganda dialect, is a full impact brand with a unique social enterprise that educates, employs and empowers women in extreme poverty in Dallas and Uganda. Each piece of jewelry and hand-woven textiles are hand-crafted by these women.
To date, Akola has empowered over 500 women to transform the lives of 4,000 children in poverty. The company has built three training centers and drilled 23 water wells in Ugandan villages. Akola’s aim is to become the most impactful brand in the world, enabling women in disadvantaged communities to design their own stories.
“We are thrilled to open the Snider Plaza location and ultimately enhance our efforts empowering women to transform their lifestyles and support their families,” says Akola Founder Brittany Merrill Underwood. “Highland Park is where Akola was born, while I was at SMU, so it’s the perfect home for us.”
The new Akola shop is stocked with jewelry and hand-woven textiles ranging in price from $10-$200. The new location also offers the brand’s new fall contemporary line – an elevated collection entirely handmade in Dallas. The collection has a refined aesthetic and features luxe materials including silk-knotted beads, gold discs with 14-carat gold plating, and gemstones. It echoes the same overall ethos of Akola, but is slightly more formal – perfect for accentuating an evening outfit.
Akola is currently sold at 200 specialty stores nationwide, Neiman Marcus, and online at Akolaproject.org. 100% of proceeds from every purchase are returned to Akola’s development projects in Uganda and Dallas.
