A legend over one hundred years old, a resolutely modern motif
Created in 1896 by Georges Vuitton, son of the founder of Louis Vuitton, the Monogram canvas
soon came to symbolize modern luxury.
Original, extremely durable and entirely waterproof, it was first used to cover trunks and
suitcases, real travel wardrobes, as well as other pieces of rigid luggage.
Gaston-Louis Vuitton, Georges's son, developed a new coating procedure in 1959 which made the
canvas more supple. Invented respectively in 1901 and 1924, and today considered to be classics,
the Steamer bag and the Keepall were the first to make use of this innovation.
In the interest of adapting new creations to changing travel conditions, Louis Vuitton took
advantage of the suppleness of Monogram canvas to create an entire line of soft-sided bags
as well as many city bags and other small leather items.
