Aug 4, 1997 / FW/ --- The year was 1983 and Decter just introduced the Star Quality
Series of mannequins.
New mannequins are introduced during Market Week, which is "Shop East" in New York,
traditionally during December.
Like any new product in the market, you need to advertising materials for it, and
one of the most common used tool is the catalog.
A mannequin company usually hire an advertising agency for this.
Or if they have an in-house advertising department, they do it themselves.
Any which way the mannequin manufacturer go, there has to be a "photo shoot,"
and it will need stylists, photographers and production designer to do the job.
The setting used for this one was the Starlite Cafe located at the corner of
Gardener and Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, CA.
The production designer chose a "club scene," hence all the mannequins needed to
be dressed and made up for a night-out in town.
Styling mannequins, specially realistic one like the Star Quality series is very
much the same as styling models for a fashion show.
You are looking for the total look - shoes, clothes and accessories.
The make-up artist and hairdresser creates the make-up and hair do to conform with
the atmosphere.
And the photographer - he has to shoot the mannequins like they are real people.
Sounds easy? Not really. Wait until you talk to the crew.
