NEW YORK, Sep 12, 2006/ FW/ – A native of Kolkata, India, Sabyachi Murkherjee is one of the awardees of ‘UPS Delivering Fashion’s Future’ for 2006, concurrently debuting on the New York runway for the Spring 2007 season.
In an interview with UPS, Mukherjee, 31, said that showing at New York Fashion Week is “great recognition for me, my country and the city where I come from.’
A graduate of the National Institute for Fashion Technology in Kolkata, Mukherjee, began his foray into fashion as a costume designer at Bollywood, which he still does extensively today.
Considered a ‘hometown hero’ in his home city Kolkata, Mukherjee’s decision to study fashion was baffling to his family and friends.
“People there had no idea what was the fashion industry really was, when I started,” Mukherjee, 31, told UPS. But his family soon realized that there would be no holding him back.
“As a child, I always was more interested in cutting my father’s socks and putting dresses on my sister’s dolls than playing soccer. My family was mortified!” Mukherjee related.
His decision to follow his dreams has won him national acclaim in India and becoming an awardee for the prestigious ‘Most Outstanding Designer of India’ by the Times of India.
Again, in an interview with UPS, Mukherjee said that ‘his still is still evolving and that he won’t be pinned down to define it.’
“It’s important for a designer not to get trapped with a particular image,’ Mukherjee told UPS. “Reinvention is the name of the game.”
“Your roots are what make you unique,” Mukherjee added. “If you’re an Indian designer, people want a little bit of Indian ethnicity in the clothing, but it must translate to cosmopolitan clothes.”
