Versace: A Gift of Life

PARIS, Jan 25, 2003/ FW/ --- A few days after Christmas, a mysterious card arrived in the mail.
It conveyed Season's Greetings and indicated that a donation had been made to
the Elton John AIDS Foundation in the name of Fashion Windows.
As the card was unsigned, I knew not from whence it had come, but
immediately put it beside a lighted candle where the gild flickered in the
winter dusk.
It was not until some weeks later that I noticed, discreetly placed on the
back, the unmistakable Medusa logo of the House of Versace.
The first day of the Haute Couture season was slightly altered this year.
Instead of staging the customary catwalk, Versace opted to show their
Atelier line by presentation.
The Rue de Faubourg St. Honoré boutique had
been turned into a nightclub for the event.
The House presented 10 different gowns, and judging from the opulence and
panache of the design, Donatella appeared to be focused on the red carpet in
LA.
With a client list that include Jennifer Lopez and Sharon Stone,
it will not be surprising to see 'Versace' during the Oscars.
Versace's selected guests were offered a sumptuous present at Monday's
event, a silk-covered book of sketches. But perhaps the best gift of all,
and the one that reflects the spirit of Gianni, is the gift of life
anonymously given.
