Emanuel Ungaro: A Master of Texture and Prints

The son of a tailor, Emanuel Ungaro mastered his cutting techniques at his father's workshop.
Professionaly, he trained under Balenciaga, where he learned about line, color and draping.
And while working at Courreges, he honed his skills and his style became fully mature and
crystalized.
Emanuel Ungaro's designs are the sum of his training and his dreams. After mastering the skills
of his trade, he started to experiment with textures and prints, an unknown during the 1970s,
in fact, it was almost a taboo.
But Ungaro wanted something different for the women whom he dresses. The Ungaro woman is sexy, but
not vulgar, and in his own words, "seductive." In short, Emanuel Ungaro was thinking of
sex appeal even before it became a buzzword in fashion.
His continued success (he has been in fashion for almost 50 years) can be attributed to his never
losing his focus on what he wants to achieve in his designs.
The Spring 2002 collection is his last for ready-to-wear. He will continue to design haute
couture, and passed the torch to the young Giambattista Valli to rejuvenate the RTW collection
and expand the firm internationally.
Valli stayed until the Spring 2005 season, after which he resigned to launch his own label during the
Fall 2005 season.
Vincent Darre came on board after Valli and debuted for Emanuel Ungaro during the Fall 2005 Paris season. He stayed only for two seasons.
Peter Hyde Dundas was named Artistic Director on Dec 2005 and made his debut in Paris in Feb 2006, during the Fall 2006 Pret-a-porter season.
